South exits bravely in LA

Britain's Melanie South finally crashed out of the East West Bank Classic after an unexpected run to the third round in Los Angeles.

The 22-year-old lost in qualifying but was elevated into the main draw when Serena Williams pulled out, receiving a bye into the second round.

South, the British number four, produced an impressive display to beat Czech Petra Kvitova 6-4 6-2 on Wednesday.

But she could not continue her good form against China's Meng Yuan, going down 6-2 6-3.
