Michael Phelps has lived up to the hype and broken Mark Spitz's record for the most golds won at a single games - taking eight home from Beijing.

Instantly he was hailed by many as "the greatest Olympian ever". Is this a fair title for an undoubtedly supreme sportsman? Or is it too early to say? Are there too many medals available to swimmers anyway?
