Sultan rules at Chester
Fresh from saddling the first-race winner on Thursday, Tom Tate repeated the trick on the final day of Chester's May meeting as his Celtic Sultan made all in the Warwick International Handicap.
Micky Fenton soon had the 7-1 chance bowling along at the head of affairs and his mount kept finding under pressure to get home by a neck from the unlucky-in-running Extraterrestrial.
Tate said: "I hoped he had improved a bit over the winter and he did that quite smoothly. He will have to go up to Listed class now and we'll give him the chance to improve. He is very similar to my Welsh Emperor and is a real stiff six-and-a-half to seven furlong horse."
Henry Cecil has gone close a few times this week and finally hit the back of the net as Portodora overcame her draw in stall 10 to spring a 14-1 surprise in the Alchem Merseyside Cheshire Regiment Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
"She got there and looked around at the crowd but I am pleased with her as she hasn't really come in her coat," said Cecil.
Chester Cup-winning trainer Ian Williams narrowly missed out on doubling his tally for the week as his Cruise Director was just pipped by Maslak (18-1) in the Manor House Stables LLP Handicap.
Locally-based Alan Berry celebrated his first win of the Turf season as 16-1 chance Look Busy nailed 7-4 favourite Chartist in the Hawker Beechcraft Handicap.
