Old boy Distinction going strong
Veteran stayer Distinction showed plenty of enthusiasm for the game as he stuck on well to overcome Samuel in the two-mile Weatherbys VAT Services Stakes at Sandown.
Sir Michael Stoute's nine-year-old (7-2) has his quirks and needed Ryan Moore's full attention to grab Samuel by a short head in the shadow of the post, with the stewards taking a look before confirming the result.
Harry Herbert, for owners Highclere, said: "He's such a favourite and so rarely has his ground. Michael says he will keep going as long as he retains his form at this level."
There were further spoils for Stoute and Moore later on as Main Aim, backed into 4-6 favourite for the Emerald Steel Handicap, retained his unbeaten record with a powerful late drive.
"He's still a baby and that was just his second race," said the trainer. "It was a very good maiden he won, but he didn't impress me as I thought he might today. He's still learning his trade and we'll stick to seven furlongs."
Frankie Dettori completed a double initiated by Ancien Regime when forcing Rosaleen (9-1) across the line ahead of the onrushing Visit in the Listed Agfa Healthcare Stakes.
"She's still improving and her owner Mr Wilson will have to decide if he wants to breed from her. We'll have a think," said trainer Brian Meehan.
