Geordieland finally landed the big pot his consistent efforts deserved when he got up on the line to win the Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup on the Knavesmire.

Jamie Osborne's stayer has been the bridesmaid on so many occasions, but given an ultra-patient ride by Shane Kelly, he nailed Royal And Regal by a head.

Neil Callan was allowed to dictate in front on Michael Jarvis's John Porter winner and he looked to have ridden a perfect race, but the 13-2 chance collared him in the shadow of the post.

Kelly said of the winner: "For a stayer he's got plenty of speed. The plan was if we were going to get beat, it would be for coming too late. He got me out of trouble when he quickened up really well.

"Even though we had three or four lengths to make up on Neil, I was always pretty sure I was going to get there.

"It would be unfair to crab him. That's just his style and I wouldn't mind riding some more like him."

Osborne joked: "Shane Kelly is a bit rusty and he came too soon! It is just fantastic. If for nothing else, it's just great for the horse himself.

"Timeform gave him a squiggle last year for his run at Pontefract but everyone is allowed one real stinker, and hopefully they will remove that now. We'll have another shot at Yeats at Royal Ascot."

Michael Jarvis said of the runner-up: "He was on his own in front for a long time and I think he was just idling a bit."

Owner Peter Savill added: "Once he had been headed he tried to come back at the other horse, but when one sticks its head in front that late there is not much you can do. The Irish Leger is probably his long-term target this year."
