Ancien Regime got one up on his elders by winning Sandown's Champagne Lanson Sprint Stakes as the only three-year-old in the race.

Michael Jarvis elected to step his colt out of handicap company for this Group Three event and his faith was justified as Frankie Dettori settled him towards the front from the off.

Ancien Regime (3-1) took over inside the final furlong and had just enough in the tank to hold Prime Defender by a neck, with 13-8 favourite Hoh Mike flashing home for third.

"He's a nice horse and was rated 105 already, so we decided to go for a stakes race over handicaps," said Jarvis.

The trainer was asked if he would consider Glorious Goodwood now, but he replied: "I'd sooner go for the Nunthorpe Stakes, but I will look at other options. He's only a three-year-old, but he could be a top horse next year."

Dettori was handed a two-day ban (July 21-22) for allowing his mount to drift, adding to three days incurred the previous afternoon.
