England face a selection dilemma for next week's second Test at Old Trafford against New Zealand after Matthew Hoggard was ruled out with a broken thumb.

The Yorkshire seamer, recalled to the squad for the start of the npower series but deemed surplus to requirements for the first Test, will see a specialist next week to determine the full extent of the injury and the likely recovery period.

He sustained the injury when he was hit by a Steve Harmison delivery batting for Yorkshire during their comprehensive championship defeat by Durham at Chester-le-Street.

Hoggard is the second England bowler in less than a week to suffer an injury blow after all-rounder Andrew Flintoff was sidelined for the opening two Tests with a side strain.

"It's a major disappointment to get injured at this stage of the season, especially as I feel that I have been bowling well for Yorkshire in county cricket," said Hoggard.

"I'm really determined to try and win back my place with England, so I am hoping that the injury is not too serious and that I can get back on the field with Yorkshire as soon as the fracture has mended."
