Jonathan Kaye was tied with four other players for first place as the weather wreaked havoc on the opening day of the AT&T Classic at TPC Sugarloaf.

Kaye shot a six-under-par 66 to share the clubhouse lead with Ryan Palmer, Jonathan Byrd, Parker McLachlin and Kenny Perry as torrential rain stopped play for half an hour in the afternoon, preventing 34 players from finishing their rounds.

Charles Howell III, David Toms, Ted Purdy and Bob Sowards are one shot off the pace, with another 10 players just a stroke further back.

Defending champion Zach Johnson battled through the inclement conditions in the afternoon to card a three-under 69 with five birdies and a bogey.

Johnson defeated Ryuji Imada in a play-off last season.
