Coates ready for ``tough challenge''

Chairman Peter Coates has hinted a proportion of the promotion windfall will be made available to boss Tony Pulis as he seeks to build a team that can "stay up and stay viable" in the Premier League.

Stoke clinched promotion back to the top tier for the first time since 1985 last Sunday and chairman Coates insists the club will spend wisely in an attempt to maintain their new-found Premiership status beyond next season.

"We want to stay up and stay viable - they are the twin objectives," Coates told the Sentinel. "It's about good management on and off the field, but it's a fiercely competitive world and so that is easier to say than to achieve.

"It's a tough challenge ahead, we are in no doubt about that, but we are determined to be competitive next season."

"But, primarily, it's about getting a good team out at the Britannia Stadium and winning matches. That will be our number one priority.

"This is a great chance for this club to develop and that's what we're aiming to do. Getting promoted to the Premier League is an enormous thing and we want to make the most of it."
