Sir Alf was head and shoulders above the rest
Current England coach Fabio Capello today unveils a bust of the greatest England manager of them all - Sir Alf Ramsey - at Wembley.
The FA is honouring the achievements of Sir Alf by unveiling a brand new sculpture of England’s 1966 World Cup winning manager at the national stadium.
Capello will be joined at the ceremony by the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Geoff Hurst and their 1966 teammates, plus Lord Triesman and Sir Trevor Brooking.
Bobby Moore’s widow, Stephanie Moore, will also be in attendance while former England full back George Cohen will represent Lady Victoria Ramsey at the event.
The sculpture of Sir Alf Ramsey has been crafted by Philip Jackson, the artist behind iconic statues such as Wembley’s Bobby Moore and the United Trinity that sits outside Old Trafford.
Jackson commented: “My thinking behind it all was to create something that will inspire the current national team and, at the same time, put the frighteners on the opposition. Sir Alf was well known for being firm and was a very strong individual so I hope those steely qualities come over through the sculpture."
George Cohen said: "It’s a tremendous sculpture and it’s like he’s actually in the room with you. That determined look on his face is exactly how I remember him and tells you exactly who was in charge.
"When you were in the presence of Sir Alf there was a definite sense of ‘gentleman, we’re here to do business’ and the sculpture really captures that feeling."
