Brentford turn to Premier League in transfer row

Brentford have asked the Premier League to investigate the transfer of their former defender Michael Turner from Hull City to Sunderland.

There has been some confusion over the exact fee paid by Sunderland to Hull for Turner this summer and, as a result, the percentage in sell-on fees owed to former clubs Brentford and Charlton.

"We have previously written to the Football League requesting that they ask the Premier League to carry out a review of the transfer fee following the transfer of Michael Turner from Hull to Sunderland," said Brentford director and acting CEO David Heath.

"Hull and Sunderland have to present to the Premier League Board at a board meeting on November 20.

"We have a disagreement with Charlton Athletic concerning the sell-on clause and a percentage of the sell-on fee in question is being held by the Football League.

"Both clubs have previously received their percentages of the sell-on fee that were not in dispute.

“Brentford FC have submitted their Statement of Claim to the Football League and the matter will be resolved at a Football Disciplinary Hearing during the week commencing November 30."

Hull boss Phil Brown had originally valued Turner at around £12 million but it has been revealed the 25-year-old cost the Wearsiders just £4m, although the fee was undisclosed at the time. This is what Brentford are questioning.

The deal did not include any add-ons based on performances with 33 per cent of the £4m going to Turner's former clubs Brentford and Charlton.

The size of the fee has again raised questions about the necessity to balance the books but new chairman Adam Pearson insists the club didn't have to sell, adding: "Under no circumstances was it a financial necessity to sell Michael Turner.

"I can only second guess what people were thinking but there was probably a feeling the player wanted to go and that was the best possible deal available for him.

"It's not incremental, the total amount of cash we will receive for Michael Turner is £2.8m. Those are the facts."
