Pardew pleased with strike duo

Charlton boss Alan Pardew is hoping Andy Gray and Luke Varney gave him a glimpse of things to come with their performances against Coventry on Sunday.

The duo, who have endured a frustrating season in front of goal, linked up well on numerous occasions and both found the net in the 4-1 rout of the Sky Blues.

Pardew was left purring about the second goal, when Varney backheeled the ball into Gray's path for the former Burnley striker to tuck away.

"That goal was Premier League standard," said Pardew. "It really was a great goal. It was everything we'd hoped for from Andy Gray and Luke Varney.

"But the pressure was immense on them this season, especially when we weren't scoring goals for a period during the term. But they showed they're good enough, they just need to be stronger mentally if they are going to be the front two next year."
