James Anderson and Stuart Broad claimed early wickets as England made good use of the overcast conditions when the first Test began after a rain delay.

Anderson found the outside edge of both openers Aaron Redmond and Jamie How to give the hosts a dream start.

He also had Hamish Marshall caught off a no-ball and wasted a run-out chance before Ross Taylor's skied pull shot off Broad reduced the Kiwis to 41-3.
